What is a physical therapy bike fit?

A physical therapy bike fit at Rise Physical Therapy is a personalized assessment of your body's range of motion and strength and how it fits your bike performed by our team of experienced Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPTs), who are also cyclists. By combining our deep understanding of body mechanics and cycling mechanics, we tailor your bike to your body’s unique needs. This approach helps reduce discomfort, prevent injuries, and improve your overall cycling experience.

A physical therapy bike fit can help improve performance by eliminating pain, but it is not meant to replace a performance bike fit.

Who is a physical therapy bike fit for?

A PT bike fit is ideal for cyclists who want to ride comfortably and efficiently while addressing physical limitations or concerns. Whether you're a recreational rider, someone recovering from an injury, or someone experiencing pain or discomfort while cycling, our PT bike fit focuses on making your bike work for you, not against you.

If you have a history of musculoskeletal issues, such as back pain, knee discomfort, or hip tightness, a PT bike fit is especially beneficial. We consider your body’s mechanics, flexibility, and strength when making adjustments to ensure the best possible fit for your health and comfort.

How to decide if a physical therapy bike fit is right for you

You experience pain and/or discomfort during or after cycling

If you're struggling with pain in your knees, hips, lower back, or neck, wrists, or elbows while cycling, a PT bike fit is an excellent option. Our team works to identify the underlying bio-mechanical causes of your pain and adjusts your bike to help alleviate discomfort. Our bike fit is paired with a personalized mobility program to ensure your body can handle the demands of cycling.

You have a lingering injury that prevents you from riding comfortably

A physical therapy bike fit is a great choice if you have a history of injury, whether it's a chronic issue like a knee injury or a past cycling-related accident. We assess your physical limitations and adjust your bike accordingly to avoid further stress on vulnerable areas.

You want to be more proactive and prevent injuries before they happen and ride more efficiently

During your physical therapy bike fit, your therapist will assess your mobility on and off the bike. A physical therapy bike fit is designed to help reduce the risk of injuries by ensuring proper alignment, positioning, and pedal mechanics. It’s perfect for cyclists of all levels who want to ride longer and more comfortably without increasing the risk of harm.

Cycling is your primary form of exercise or rehabilitation

If cycling plays a key role in your fitness or recovery plan, having the right fit can enhance your performance and accelerate recovery. A physical therapy bike fit allows us to work with you to ensure your bike setup supports your body’s needs.

How is a physical therapy bike fit different than a performance bike fit?

Physical therapy bike fit vs. performance bike fit

While both PT bike fits and performance bike fits optimize your bike setup, they serve different goals:
  •  A physical therapy bike fit focuses on your body’s physical needs, addressing issues like injury prevention, comfort, and long-term health. It’s especially beneficial for cyclists experiencing pain, recovering from injury, or those with unique anatomical considerations.
  • Performance bike fit is centered around maximizing your speed, power output, and efficiency for competitive athletes. This fit is often used by serious racers who prioritize performance metrics over comfort.

At Rise Physical Therapy, our bike fit offers a more holistic approach, considering your overall health and injury prevention while improving comfort and efficiency. If you’re unsure which fit is right for you, our team can help you make an informed decision based on your cycling goals and physical health.

How a PT Bike Fit Helps Cyclists

  • Improved Comfort: Adjustments to saddle height, handlebar position, and pedal alignment reduce pain and discomfort, allowing for longer, more comfortable rides.
  • Injury Prevention: Our team analyzes your posture, flexibility, and strength to minimize injury risks and ensure proper alignment.
  • Enhanced Performance: A proper fit allows for more efficient pedal strokes and better power transfer, helping you ride faster and with less effort.
  • Addressing Physical Limitations: We consider your unique anatomy and past injuries, making adjustments to accommodate your needs and improve your riding experience.
  • Long-Term Health Benefits: Our bike fits protect your joints and muscles, ensuring you can enjoy cycling comfortably and injury-free for years to come.
